LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Monday! We are tracking rainy conditions in the forecast to start the week. We have a morning round of rain pushing through the area, with more on the way by the afternoon and evening. Highs today will climb to the upper 50s and lower 60s which is well above average for mid-December. As a cold front approaches this evening, expect another round of widespread showers. Rain totals through Monday night will range from0.5 to 1 inch, with the heaviest amounts north and west of I-75.
Tuesday: A Break in the Rain
By Tuesday morning, the cold front will move south of the area, leaving behind drier conditions and clearing skies. Highs will remain seasonable, reaching the mid-to-upper 50s. Enjoy this break from the rain because it won’t last long.
Wednesday: Another Round of Rain and a Warm-Up
Rain returns late Tuesday night into Wednesday as a new storm system develops to our southwest. A warm front will lift across the region, bringing widespread rain and possibly a rumble of thunder by Wednesday afternoon. Another round of half an inch to an inch of rain is expected.
Temperatures will rise steadily through the day, with highs near 60 in our southern counties. Rain will taper off late Wednesday night as another cold front sweeps through, bringing cooler air with it.
Thursday: Turning Colder
Thursday starts off dry but noticeably cooler. Morning lows will drop into the 30s, and afternoon highs will only reach the upper 40s. As
the colder air settles in, it will mark the start of a colder pattern heading into the weekend.
Friday into the Weekend: Cold Air Settles in
A quick-moving clipper system could bring light snow or a mix of rain and snow late Friday into Saturday. Accumulations, if any, would be light and mostly confined to highest elevations. Saturday and Sunday will feel like winter, with highs only in the low-to-mid 30s and overnight lows dipping into the 20s—or even the teens in some spots.
Next Week: Cold Start to the Holiday Week
Temperatures are expected to stay colder to start next week, with highs struggling to climb above freezing and lows staying well below freezing. We are expecting a pattern flip with above average temperatures eventually returning by the end of the week, into the weekend following Christmas.
