Earthquake centered off California coast; tsunami warning issued for West Coast
The U.S. Geological Survey said that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake was centered about 40 miles west-northwest of Petrolia, California late Thursday morning. The earthquake prompted officials to issue a tsunami warning for parts of the Oregon and California coasts.
There was no immediate word of damage or injuries. The earthquake was reported at 10:44 a.m. PT.
The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 8 miles.
The USGS estimated that areas around Petrolia, California, would experience “very strong” shaking.

A possible tsunami could reach Fort Bragg, California, by 11:10 a.m. local and San Francisco around 12:10 p.m. PT. Residents along the West Coast were sent a message through their smartphones warning of a potential tsunami.
